“Building your residential dreams is mainly about getting to know you.”

TELL US MORE HOW YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW IT INFUENCES YOUR APPROACH AND MAKES YOUR WORK AS AN INTERIOR DESIGNER SO SPECIAL?

Originally I am from the Netherlands, where I finished my study in ‘Architecture and Construction Engineering’.

Post studies I spent several years there sharping my skills as a facility and building management consultant. During this time, I gave strategic advice to universities, offices, and hospitals on their development and renovation projects.

After this professional experience I became a renovation consultant for restaurants and private homes. This was mainly focused on functional work and how spaces could be best used. I then added my passion for interior design to that to enable me to do what I love most, combining functionality and aesthetics to help people realise their residential dreams.

What really fascinates me about my work is that I work for clients with different international backgrounds. As a result, I have become a specialist in knowledge of the diversity of styles, preferences, wishes and cultures of my clients. Each project is custom and reflects the unique personalities and lifestyles of my clients.

YOUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY IS “BUILDING YOUR RESIDENTIAL DREAMS IS MAINLY ABOUT GETTING TO KNOW YOU”. TALK US THROUGH WHAT THIS MEANS…

All our designs are custom made and unique. Understanding our customers, their wishes, demands and lifestyle is the basis for our success. We aim to create timeless, warm, interesting, inspiring and functional spaces and bespoke designs to meet the demands of our clients.

WHAT’S YOUR INTERIOR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY?

My design philosophy focuses on creating spaces that seamlessly combine functionality, aesthetics and individuality. I believe in deeply understanding each client's individual preferences, lifestyle and desires to create designs that truly reflect their personality. My goal is to create timeless and balanced interiors that not only meet but exceed expectations. Inspired by global design trends, I stay true to the client's vision and ensure that every project is a harmonious blend of style, comfort and individuality.

WOULD YOU SAY YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR STYLE YOU FAVOUR IN YOUR INTERIOR DESIGNS?

I adapt my interior style to each client's preferences, but some characteristics remain consistent throughout my work.

In general, I prefer a style with neutral colors, natural materials and a commitment to creating balanced and relaxing interiors. This results in spaces that radiate peace, confidence and comfortable luxury and find a perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics.

My designs are known for their high-quality luxury, with bespoke furniture and bespoke elements tailored to the specific requirements of each client. The goal is to create designs that not only look good, but also hold up over time in style and functionality.

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?

I get a lot of inspiration from nature from all over the world. Everywhere I go I pay attention to colors and the textures created by the water and wind. This influence is reflected in my designs, which incorporate earth tones and natural materials such as wood and tiles.

Visiting design fairs, hotels and restaurants and following top designers from all over the world are also a source of inspiration for me.

As a member of clubs for prestigious interior design companies, as well as the Professional Association of Dutch Interior Architects, I have the opportunity to attend inspiring meetings and excursions.

DO YOU HAVE A STAND-OUT PROJECT YOU’VE WORKED ON?

Every project I work on is unique and special.

Two notable examples are designing homes with breathtaking lake views, where we have created spaces that blend seamlessly with the natural beauty surrounding them.

Another example is a bathroom project with luxurious retro accents and vibrant green tiles.

Luxury bathrooms, such as those in a villa near Geneva and another in Blonay, demonstrate my passion for creating completely customized spaces with unique furniture that reflects the client's style.

In fact, every project is outstanding. It is really rewarding to see the happiness of my clients and to build long-lasting relationships with them.

IF YOU COULD GIVE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE TO SOMEONE ABOUT TO RETHINK OR RENOVATE THEIR HOME WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Giving one piece of advice is a difficult task because there are many different types of advice I can give. That's why I give several pieces of advice. Readers can of course contact me for personal advice.

Advice 1 (project process): Budget
When renovating or redecorating, it is extremely important to set a clear goal and budget as this will guide all your decisions and help the process. Reserve 10-15% extra budget for unforeseen circumstances

Advice 2 (project process): Planning
You may also want to set a realistic timeline as delays can occur and this will help you maintain a clear overview. If you encounter delays, unexpected surprises, or changes in the process, stay flexible.

In addition to the importance of the project process, I would like to share some interior design tips:

Advice 1 (design process): Lighting
Firstly, make sure you plan for adequate lighting, as good lighting can make a significant difference to the ambiance and functionality of a room.

Advice 2 (design process): Storage space
Additionally, make sure you build plenty of storage space into your design, which will contribute to a tidy and organized living environment.

Advice 3 (design process): Materials
Select high-quality materials and finishes that suit your taste and lifestyle. Make sure that you take maintenance aspects into account when making your choices.

Advice 3 (design process): Make it personal
Creating a personalized space that reflects your preferences and personality is of course most important, because your home should reflect your unique style.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE OF FURNITURE WE OFFER AT MILOLA AND WHY?

My absolute favourite of Milola's furniture offerings is the Kristensen & Kristensen brand. The reason is simple: their furniture is completely customisable, making it ideal for any style. The impeccable quality they provide is truly remarkable. Their designs are captivating in their elegance and modernity, while also possessing a timeless appeal. Personally, I own one of their tables, which I customised to meet my specific needs. I frequently show it to my clients, and it is always well received. In my opinion, Kristensen & Kristensen's furniture stands out due to its versatility and quality. Lastly, I also really like the beds and sofa beds that Bolzan has to offer. Additionally, these sofa beds can be customised as well to fit the design aesthetic that you prefer.
