At Milola, we're lucky to spend everyday working on something we love, and in this months Milola Meets we meet a duo who share our passion and who's work is a testament to their combined expertise. This month we catch up with Alessio Lattanzi & Ivan Falquet, Geneva based Interior designers and renovation consultants to hear what makes them tick and how their collaboration began...

Bonjour!

We are Alessio Lattanzi and Ivan Falquet, founders of SPAZIO Interior Design, a Geneva based firm, melting together the Italian style with the Swiss precision. We help with any decoration or renovation project.

“We don’t like to follow any rule in decoration. When shapes, colours and spaces respect the personality of the client and are well harmonized that is where a project works.”

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUNDS AND HOW THEY INFLUENCE YOUR APPROACH AND MAKE YOUR WORK AS INTERIOR DESIGNERS & RENOVATION CONSULTANTS SO SPECIAL?

My name is Alessio, I am roman and I have been into decoration for 15 years now. After studying architecture and founding a design and interior design studio in Rome, I moved to Geneva where I opened a home decor store and went back to the interior decoration activity.

I’m Ivan, I am genevan and I have been following a family tradition of more than 30 years in the field of renovation, I take care of all the aspects related to the building site and the craftsmen.

We founded SPAZIO Interior Design after meeting for a small renovation work in Alessio’s store. We immediately felt a perfect match between us, being professionally very similar yet complementary. Alessio is the creative and artistic side of SPAZIO while Ivan is making any project happen, from a technical point of view. We consider ourselves two personalities who make one team.

YOUR ESSENCE IS ABOUT BREAKING OUTSIDE OF THE TYPICAL RULES AND HARMONISING A DESIGN WITH A CLIENT'S PERSONALITY, TALK US THROUGH WHAT THIS MEANS…

I personally hate following strict rules or definitions in life. I find that beauty depends on your personal taste, on a natural, inborn sense of harmony. As an interior designer I think that rules can often lead you to copy and paste solutions, while I prefer to listen carefully to my customers, being more into an empathic and elastic kind of mood. I want to find their home solution, something that reflects their essence, that really works with their way of living. I would use these words to describe my attitude: personal, authentic, harmonious, gentle.

The only rule we want to follow is being precise and reliable on all technical aspects of the project.

This is where Ivan really stands out as a highly qualified professional, somebody who is curious and has a deep knowledge of all processes of construction. He would tell me when an idea is really possible or not and he would always try to find a solution. The words for him are definitely: open-minded, never-surrendering, solution-maker

WHAT’S YOUR INTERIOR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY?

I believe that, beside taste, we all have inner archetypes coming from our history, from Art and Architecture. To give an example, we all know what classical or baroque art is and I think this remains the most important and precious legacy for this job. When you can count on a rich archetypal base, then you can translate it into something new, you can give it a real twist, a new direction, a modern, contemporary one.

Et les jeux sont faits!

Keeping this knowledge alive and try to be always up to date, with the latest trends, is the best way allowing me to respond to my customers’ wishes. My philosophy finds its roots both in my cultural background and in my personality. As an Italian I love to express myself in many ways, being creative, ironic and unconventional, following a diagonal thinking direction, making myself find different solutions. Beside this, I also feel the need of being very detailed and balanced, while planning the work with Ivan, to promote the most fluid and efficient execution.

WOULD YOU SAY YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR STYLE YOU FAVOUR IN YOUR INTERIOR DESIGNS?

I like an informal and easy style, where everything comes naturally and is not overdone, or too emphatic.I also love Italian mid-century design and its particular decoration style, combining colours and shapes in a very natural way, mixing materials and textures unconventionally. That is also why I love mixing and matching, finding beauty in the natural imperfections as well.

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?

I take my inspiration from everywhere!

From nature, from museums, from my everyday life in general. I am very attracted by textures and I can detect them wherever I go. On a recent trip in France for example, I took this little iron cube with me, a complete rusted one that I found on the street. I love primary materials like wood, stone or iron, pieces worked by man or by time. I get so fascinated by the interaction between nature and craftsmanship

I love things that are reworked by the sea and in general I am inspired by the forces that mould the materials, both natural or human. .

DO YOU HAVE A STAND-OUT PROJECT YOU’VE WORKED ON?

I want to tell you about an apparently small intervention we did in this apartment in Geneva. It completely changed its look!

We fully recoated the entrance with a delicate geometric wallpaper inspired by a vintage textile print, designed by Beatrice Rossetti. The space was quite narrow and I got inspired by those ancient tapestries covering the cabinets in the palaces of Italian nobles, or the English houses where rooms make you feel like being in a warm charming box.

This simple idea gave a special charm to the entire house and especially to the hallway that is usually considered not so important. These are the most satisfactory things in my job. The small touches that really make the difference.

IF YOU COULD GIVE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE TO SOMEONE ABOUT TO RETHINK OR RENOVATE THEIR HOME WHAT WOULD IT BE?

My piece of advice would be this one: always try to get your inspiration from what is already there, try not to go against the nature of a place. You can change it and make it yours by adapting it and finding your personal solution, but always try to listen and to respect its nature. Making a mountain chalet on the seaside wouldn’t be a good idea to me.

Ivan: from a technical point of view the most important thing is choosing the professionals who are good and attentive listeners but ready to give you an honest and objective perspective as well .
This might sound obvious, but it’s not! Moreover I think that you can detect a good professional from his method and precision

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE OF FURNITURE WE OFFER AT MILOLA AND WHY?

I am in love with Marty bed from Bolzan and Amelia round table from Kristensen Kristensen. They both speak the visual language of design from the 50ties. I love the clear shapes that make every piece so unique and so out of time.
