Interior design trends for 2025: Follow your heart, not just the trend
As we step into 2025, the world of interior design continues to evolve, drawing inspiration from craftsmanship and a renewed appreciation for comfort and character. We’ve gathered insights from some of our interior design partners to bring you a glimpse of what’s trending this year. But before diving in, let’s remember an important principle: trends are tools, not rules. The heart of interior design lies in creating a space that reflects your personality and feels like home.
“Trends are tools, not rules. The heart of interior design lies in creating a space that reflects your personality and feels like home.”
Key Interior Design Trends for 2025
1. Pattern Mixing and Layering
We spoke with Zurich-based interior designer, Christine Schumacher from Localia Interiors who highlighted the rise of “Pattern mixing and layering: combining different patterns within a coherent colour palette”. Think floral upholstery paired with striped throw pillows or geometric rugs against soft damask drapes. This trend is perfect for those who love to experiment and create visually rich spaces.
2. Rounded Forms
Curves continue to charm in 2025 as Olga Kuzmina from OK Interiors shares; “We will see a further move away from cold minimalist forms to rounded, enveloping and cozy forms. Right angles are now being rounded everywhere, not only in upholstered furniture but also in cabinetry and even walls!”
3. Textured Minimalism
Lara Fredricks from Fredricks Interior & Event Design introduces 'textured minimalism' as a key trend, explaining, “In 2025, interior design celebrates textured minimalism, an approach that enhances the refined by playing with materials. Gone are the sanitized spaces: make way for vibrant and organic surfaces. The walls and ceilings are adorned with plaster finishes with a tactile effect, the textiles curly, while the raw wood, with its visible veins, stands out as the furniture star. Earthy tones dominate, punctuated by cool shades like slate blue or moss green for an elegant contrast. This trend combines a contemporary aesthetic, where every detail invites you to live more firmly in the essentials.”
4. Wall and Ceiling Details
Christine from Localia Interiors adds that mouldings, panelling, and exposed beams are projected to make a comeback in 2025. These details create depth and texture, giving rooms a timeless, architectural feel. As Christine remarks, “I really hope these stay longer than just a trend!”
5. Muted and Dark Colours
“Dark and muted colours have taken the top spot from cream and beige” explains Christine. Dark, moody hues like deep greens, muted blues, and charcoal tones are taking over from the light creams and beiges of the past. These colours evoke a sense of sophistication and intimacy, working well in living rooms, bedrooms, and even kitchens.
6. Use of Travertine-Style Materials
Olga from OK Interiors also adds that one of the noticeable trends for 2025 will be “The use of travertine and its imitations in kitchens, bathrooms and furniture design. This beautiful and versatile material creates warmth and coziness while remaining neutral and timeless.” Whether used in countertops, sinks, indoor or outdoor furniture, this material or it's ceramic counterparts strike a perfect balance between elegance and coziness.
7. Multi-Coloured Metals
Moving beyond single-tone metallics, designers are embracing multi-coloured metals, especially in accessories. Olga anticipates this trend expanding to a broader range of applications this year, offering endless possibilities for a layered, luxurious look.
8. Warm, earthy tones
We couldn't talk about interior design trends for 2025 without mentioning the Pantone Colour of the Year: Mocha Mousse. This warm, earthy tone complements the trend of muted and dark colours, offering a versatile backdrop that pairs beautifully with both vibrant and subtle accents. As Sophia Kelly from Sophia Kelly Design notes, "Browns/mochas are all the rave!"
Timeless over trendy
While these 2025 interior design trends provide exciting ideas, they’re not meant to dictate your choices. As Christine from Localia Interiors aptly puts it, “I’m not one for chasing trends and firmly believe in timeless interiors.” A well-designed space transcends trends, focusing on what feels right for you. If a certain trend resonates with your personality, embrace it. But never feel pressured to change your style just to keep up.
How to incorporate trends thoughtfully
- Start small: Introduce a trend through accents like cushions, throws, or artwork.
- Focus on quality: Invest in timeless, well-crafted pieces that endure beyond fleeting fads.
- Blend new with old: Combine trends with existing decor for a layered, personal touch.
- Follow your instincts: If something doesn’t feel right, skip it. Your home should make you happy.
Interior design is a reflection of who you are. So, as you explore the trends of 2025, remember: your heart is the ultimate guide. Let trends inspire, not constrain, and create a home that’s uniquely yours.
